5th World Waterfowl Conference (WWC)

Last update: 1 July 2015

Nov. 6 - 8, 2013 at the Sheraton Hotel in Hanoi, Vietnam.

This year, the conference is organized by The World Poultry Science Association, Vietnam Branch – under the auspices of The Asian Pacific Federation (APF – WPSA), and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam (MARD).

The three-day event builds on rapidly expanding and increasingly sophisticated waterfowl industries in Asia. Many top international scientists and researchers from around the world are expected to attend to discuss their recent work and share important new information with attendees.

The conference comes at a time when “sustainability” in agriculture is to the fore. The organizers have this in mind as they have chosen “Sustainable Waterfowl Production” to be the theme of the 5th WWC.

This major conference will provide an important forum for reviewing the latest advances in waterfowl research, how recent breakthroughs could affect waterfowl industries and in-depth discussion and exchange of information on sustainable waterfowl production now and into the future. The event will showcase the latest developments by oral presentations and posters in five main “streams”:

  • Genetics Breeding and Reproduction
  • Production Systems and Nutrition
  • Environment, Bio-security and Disease
  • Marketing and Product Safety
  • Small Scale Family Production

An interesting field trip is being organized. This will transport participants by bus to Dai Xuyen duck farm (to the South Hanoi about 50 km) and/or Cam Binh duck farm (to the East Hanoi about 50 km) to demonstrate new methods of sustainable duck production.

The Asian Pacific Federation of World’s Poultry Science Associations branches.

Beginning in 1912, the World’s Poultry Science Association (WPSA) has grown to become the major international association of people concerned with poultry science and its application in the poultry industries of the world. There are now more than 7600 members in 80 branches scattered across the globe. Branches in Europe collectively form a European Federation and 19 branches in Asia, Oceania and the Pacific collectively form the Asia Pacific Federation (APF).

Member branches of the APF are Australia, Bangladesh, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, KoreaRepublic, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

It is common in Asia and the Pacific for a high proportion of poultry to be raised in a small-scale environment in rural settings and villages. Often flocks of birds are no more than 10 or 20.

It is these farming situations that we as a federation have decided to concentrate on in the development of our first Working Group. The name we have chosen for this working group is the Working Group on Small Scale Family Poultry Farming

The APF has recently developed three working groups dealing with specific sectors of the poultry industry which assume great importance to the region. They are Working Group 1 on Small Scale Family Poultry Farming, Working Group 2 on Waterfowl and Working Group 3 on Ratites.

The Asia Pacific region is huge, covering approximately one third of the earth’s land mass and containing over 60% of the world’s human population. Already the region is responsible for 60% of global egg output and 35% of global poultry meat output. Around 90% of the commercial waterfowl are found here. The region is truly a rising star in the poultry industry and more specifically has become the leading light in waterfowl production, research, development and learning.

The World’s Poultry Science Association – Vietnam Branch

Established in 1999, WPSA – Vietnam branch compliances the main aims of WPSA: to foster organization, education and research throughout the poultry industries of the world.

Favorable for operation of the WPSA - Vietnam Branch is located in a country with a well developed poultry production, especially waterfowl, duck numbers ranked second in the world after China only.

On 12th and 14th March, 2007, WPSA - Vietnam Branch organized 2 workshops in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on "Poultry production in Vietnam after Accession to the WTO, opportunities and challenges", with the participation of Mr. Alan Gibbins - the President of the Association of Poultry Asia-Pacific - WPSA / APF; and Dr. Wim Tondeur - Professionals of WPSA. At these workshops, Mr. Alan Gibbins speeched expressed his pleasure and acknowledged WPSA - Vietnam Branch to be come the 14th official member of the APF.

And this year, in 2013, Vietnam is trustly chosen as the host country for the World Waterfowl Conference 5 (WWC 5) in beautiful HanoiCity.

Currently WPSA - Vietnam Branch has the official members and a large number of poultry scientists, businesses, farmers with their poultry farms, forming a system of sustainable researching-developing poultry, in appropriate to the specific availability of Vietnamese agriculture.
